Woven Design
exploration of ikat
In this series I wanted to explore the ancient technique of Ikat. Ikat is a type of yarn dyeing that involves binding threads before weaving and then dyeing them. I was interested in this technique because I love the nature of binding, dyeing, unbinding, and weaving to create unique designs. A design is formed when the bound areas of the warp or weft are left undyed while the unprotected areas of the yarn receive the dye
Going home
In this series, I wanted to show the places which I have called home: Chicago, Savannah, and Hilton Head. Growing up, when going home from school or a trip, or even flying into O’Hare, I would still say that I was flying home. When I would leave the SCAD studio at 3:00 am to bicycle back to my dorm, I’d text Mum to let her know that I was leaving, and I’d text her “home” when I arrived safely. Now that Mum lives in Hilton Head, when I go to visit her, I say that I’m going home. The phrase “going home” has always held comfort for me. It’s not just that I’m going to go see my family, I think it’s that I always get to relax when I’m anywhere that I call home.
Personal Work
These pieces were created to explore new weave-structures and revisit old ones.
